It also has to be mentioned, after X/Y's 3D overworld was so damn lacklustre, Sun and Moon felt like the actual realisation of the whole pokemon in 3D thing. The story itself, while still hokey like all good Pokmon stories are, is really well presented here. It doesn't unseat Gen 5 as my favourite overall package, it's perhaps too wordy and too small for that, the sum of its parts though make for a strong case as my personal runner up alongside the various takes on Kanto. Oh and regional forms, one of the best ideas the series had in years and still trucking on to success with the upcoming Arceus Legends.
The rest of the dex is no slouch, yeah everyone is slow as shit (whhhy) and it's a bit too heavy of legendaries and beasts over more standard mons, but even those legends feel surprisingly fresh with both the advent of the ultra beasts completely esoteric designs and even the Tapus linking strongly into the regions theme.

Yes yes, one's an Owl and that's like the win buttin for me, but beyond that we got a Pro wrestling big cat, a starter breaking from more common conventions by being both feminine and not bipedal, and every one of them has a cool typing combo. New Pokemon forms have been discovered in the Alola region in Pokemon Ultra Sun and Pokemon Ultra Moon These forms are reminiscent of the Legendary Pokemon. There is an overall Alola dex, but no National. There is a lot of crossover in the island Pokdexes, for example Pikipek can be found on every island. Like Pokmon X & Y, the local Pokdex is split into sections, one for each of the islands. I can safely say that they've got me favourite trio of starters in the series. This is a list of Pokmon from the Alola region in Pokmon Sun & Pokmon Moon. Sun and Moon were so good at embodying their setting, perhaps too strong in places (everyone stop doing that thing with your hands!), it makes the two slices of europe on either side (and Unova while I'm at it) seem like only vaguely foreign skins on top of the usual pokemon world seen in the first 4 gens.
